SAP makes moves to increase the value of big data

Published on

SAP itself has stated its analytics first approach, and in an effort to simplify big data analytics for its users and help them uncover even more value from their data, SAP recently launched SAP HANA Vora. Built as an extension of Apache Spark, Vora will enable analysis to be carried out directly on data stored in Hadoop. What this means in reality, is that users will be able to conduct analysis on two different sources of data without needing to amalgamate sources together, making the analysis much quicker and more efficient.

Importantly, analysis with Vora is also real time, as Irfan Khan, chief technology officer of SAP's global customer operation explained, Where SAP is coming into this now is we anticipate people want to do real-time insights and be able to drill-down and create analytical type of views of some of that cold storage or data lakes sitting in Hadoop environments."

Vora will be particularly useful for interrogating data that is not typically suited to analytics. For example, a bank or financial services institution could use it to detect anomalies in transactional and customer data, boosting their fraud-fighting credentials and reducing risk to customers. Or, a telco business could spot trends in network traffic and optimise bandwidth to suit, to avoid network bottlenecks.

Here at the User Group, we recognise that users are very interested in big data and analytics, but that many are at the beginning of their big data journey. As such, weve already held a number of Symposiums and Special Interest Groups (SIG) to helps users maximise their SAP investments for big data.

Weve many more events like these planned, including our Big Data SIG will talk about how to work with big data in the real world, at its next meeting on the 15th October. You can register to attend any of our upcoming events and find more information, here.
